Known as an integrated development environment, or IDE, Microsoft Visual C++ is a program designed to create applications for Windows using the C, C++ and C++/CLI languages of programming. However, instead of being only useful for writing programs, it is also a great way to then edit, test and further debug the code. Provided you understand the C++ language, it is one of the best programs out there for this specific job.

Laid out very similarly to most programming programs, Microsoft Visual C++ is intuitively easy to learn to use as well as master. All of your necessary tools are located in a menu on the left side of the screen while functionality sits on the right side. The middle acts as the workspace where you write your code.

A huge benefit to the program is its visualization of the C++ language. While learning one of these programming languages can be challenging, Microsoft’s software provides you with a visual breakdown of a code that you can then deconstruct and piece back together. In this way, it’s similar to learning how to put together a puzzle, making it a great learning tool for new programmers. You can use either already existing programs or start from scratch. If you find yourself utterly lost, Microsoft Visual C++ does come with a very helpful assistance section that breaks down exactly what you’re looking at and how each part affects the language. On top of this, the program is entirely free. Once downloaded, you’ll have access to every feature and will never be prompted for any kind of payment.

As a word of warning, Microsoft Visual C++ is a large program. Before downloading it, make sure you have enough space on your computer. Beyond this, it installs itself and is otherwise extremely easy and quick to set up.

Pros

  • Great visualizer for programmers of any level
  • Entirely free

Cons

  • Large program
  • Challenging learning curve for beginners.
